Midgar, from the world map
Midgar, from the world map

The largest city in Final Fantasy VII. The game starts here. Midgar is broken into eight sectors, reffered to by number. They used to have names, but nobody remembers them. It is also broken up vertically by large pizza-slice plates. Below them are the slums, above them are the homes of well-payed ShinRa employees. Midgar is closely associated with ShinRa.

Location

You'll have no trouble finding Midgar at all, seeing as how the game starts with you in it. It's also the first thing you'll see on the world map. For the sake of completion, it's on the northwest corner of the eastern continent.

Importance to Storyline

Midgar is a very important place in the game. It is here that more than half of the world's mako reactors are located. Midgar was built by, is controlled by, and is built around the headquarters of ShinRa. The first few hours of the game take place entirely within the city, in sectors five through seven, the number one and five reactors, and ShinRa HQ.

Sector 7

Sector 7 the first part of Midgar that you are free to explore. You wind up here as soon as you blow up the No. 1 Reactor at the very beginning of the game. This is where Tifa's bar, 7th Heaven, is. It is here that AVALANCHE goes to regroup after the first mission. You learn of Cloud and Tifa's past with eachother. Later on ShinRa gets revenge on AVALANCHE for the destruction of mako reactors by dropping destroying the pillar and dropping the plate above. 7th Heaven is in the slums below the plate, and effectively, what happens is that an entire city (the expensive homes built on the plate) is dropped on another entire city (the slums), destroying both. To add insult to injury, ShinRa tells the public that AVALANCHE did it. Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie are trapped in Sector 7 and killed.

Sector 5

Once you leave Sector 7 and bomb the No. 5 Reactor, you'll end up in a church in Sector 5. This is where Aeris and her stepmother, Elmyra, live. Aeris's church is also here, and that's where you meet the Turks. Later on, Marlene will be sent to Aeris's house for safe keeping.

Sector 6

The most important thing here, plot-wise, is probably Don Corneo. This obese would-be pimp lives at the top end of Wall Market, and trades information with ShinRa. There's a very amusing quest in which you must dress Cloud up as a girl and sneak into his mansion by posing as a potential bride.

Shinra Headquarters

Aeris gets captured by ShinRa, and AVALANCHE sets out to rescue her. In the process, they rescue and recruit Red XIII as well. A lot of exposition about the higher-ups of ShinRa is given here. Then Sephiroth puts a stop to that by killing the president and breaking Jenova out of Hojo's laboratory. Your party is eventually forced to escape from Midgar to the world map.

Midgar on Disc 2

You have to return to Midgar when ShinRa moves the giant cannon from Junon, Sister Ray, to their HQ in the center of the city. You'll have your last fight with the Turks here (which is an optional battle if you've done the Wutai sub-quest), and finish Hojo off once and for all.

Things to Do

Sector 5

If you like foreshadowing, you can talk to the guy in the tube. It'll be the place where Aeris tells you that "This guy are sick." You'll also find a Turtle's Paradise flyer in a house in the slums.

Sector 6

There is a lot to be done here, most of which involves cross-dressing. You'll want to see Wall Market.

Sector 7

This will be your very first chance to shop for new items/materia/equipment, and to actually choose and equip your materia. You will want to do both. Sector 7 is home to Beginner's Hall. It's above the weapon store. You can get at least one item here, and learn the basics of the game. If you want, you can talk to a guy next to the pillar, and take a look at it.

ShinRa Headquarters

There is a Turtle's Paradise flyer on the billboard in the back of the entrance, assuming you choose to bust in through the front doors. This is one of only two chances you will get to read this flyer.

The optional 63rd floor of ShinRa HQ has three useful items to be claimed: a Four Slot, a Star Pendant, and an All Materia.

Midgar on Disc 2

Once you fight (or decide not to fight) the Turks, the first left leads you to the Sister Ray. However, if you take the second left instead, you can go back to ShinRa HQ and get Cait Sith's ultimate weapon. This is also your last chance to read that Turtle's Paradise flyer.

Secrets

Sector 5

There is a kid in one house with 5 Gil hidden inbetween the drawers next to his bed. You can steal it, but you shouldn't bother. If you leave his money alone and come back here with the Key to Sector 5, he'll give you a hi-potion instead. This is in the same room as the first Turtle's Paradise flyer.

This may or may not count as a secret, but you can go visit the rather large flower garden next to Aeris's house (and pick up a couple hidden items there). As you'll recall, Aeris tells you that her church is the only place in Midgar where flowers can grow...and as the Flower Girl, she ought to know.

Midgar on Disc 2

Barret's ultimate weapon will be in a chest on the way up to fight Hojo, but only if you have him in your party when you open it. Also, if you take Vincent up with you, he will have an exchange with Hojo about Lucrecia.

Key to Sector 5

The Key to Sector 5 is a key item you get by excavating in Bone Village and choosing to look for "normal treasure." It allows you to go back to sectors five and six, in order to get Tifa's ultimate weapon. While you're at it, stop by Aeris's church. The first time you enter, you'll see her ghost for about two seconds. You can also go visit the kid in Sector 5 again, who will reward you if you didn't steal his money.
