Last Order: Final Fantasy VII

Last Order: Final Fantasy VII was part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series of spinoffs of the original Final Fantasy VII. Last Order is a 25-minute anime about the events in Nibelheim five years before FFVII happened. It was included with special editions of the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children DVD.
Story
Last Order is mostly a recap of the various Nibelheim flashbacks in FFVII. Sephiroth, Cloud, and Zack are investigating the Nibelheim reactor. Sephiroth goes mad and burns Nibelheim down. Tifa has the brilliant idea to follow him up to the reactor because her father is there. Her father dies and she gets her butt kicked. Zack and Cloud are not far behind. Zack fights Sephiroth and loses. Cloud just stabs Sephiroth in the back while he's not looking. Being too stupid to make sure the job is finished, he gets impaled anyway. Sephiroth decides he's lost anyway and dives into the Lifestream. (See Changes from FFVII, below.)
Zangan rescues Tifa. From the game we know that he took her to Midgar. The Turks clean up (destroying/rebuilding Nibelheim and rescuing surviving ShinRa employees -- see Changes again), but Cloud and Zack are taken by Hojo to be experimented on. Eventually they escape, and are chased by the Turks the whole way. The anime ends with Zack being shot while in the back of the truck that he and Cloud hitchhiked to Midgar in. It is implied that the next scene would be the one where Zack is killed and Cloud is left for dead on a cliff overlooking the city.
Changes from FFVII
- The Turks are present at Nibelheim, though they don't present a major continuity break because they keep their presence hidden from the main characters. This was probably done to help tie other stories from the Compilation of FFVII into the story of the original game. (The main characters of Before Crisis are included among the Turks shown.)
- In FFVII, Sephiroth dies the first time when Cloud, having been stabbed by him, grabs the sword and flings him into the pool of mako below them. In Last Order, Cloud has already stabbed Sephiroth from behind, and flings him into a wall instead. Sephiroth decides he's lost the fight, grabs Jenova's head, and jumps into the mako on his own.
- In Last Order, Tifa speaks to Cloud once in the reactor knowing that it's him. In FFVII, Tifa was never aware of his presence in Nibelheim at the time, causing her to be very confused when he recounts the events to AVALANCHE in Kalm.
