Final Fantasy VI (FFVI) is the last Final Fantasy game produced by Squaresoft, Inc for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, before the series was moved to the Sony Playstation. Not only was Final Fantasy VI the last game in the series to utilize 2-dimensional sprite graphics, but it also was the last to feature Yoshitaka Amano as Character Designer, before Tetsuya Nomura took over (though Amano did stay at Squaresoft and returned to character design for Final Fantasy IX). The plot is darker than many of the earlier games in the series, more akin to the Final Fantasy games to follow, and has gained a reputation as a bridge between the traditional "old-school" and contemporary "nu-skool" Final Fantasy.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Final Fantasy VI is typical of the series, consisting of two main areas: Field mode and Battle mode. Field mode consists of guiding a sprite around towns and the world map, allowing the player to "converse" with non-playable characters (NPC) and pick up items. From Field mode, the player can also access the menu, where the player can alter different parameters of the game changing equipment, using items, saving the game

Oftentimes wandering around the world map or in a "dungeon" can randomly instigate a battle, though at points in the story you are forced into certain fights. Battle mode aligns the sprites of four characters (of the player's choice) to the right side of the screen, to battle an often semi-randomly chosen party of enemies, which are fought using the "Active Time Battle" system standard in Final Fantasy games.

A feature unique to FFVI is the central storyline, which was designed to not have one single main character that the game revolves around, but rather to have all sixteen playable characters have a significant part of the plot. As such, there are several times when the player's party will divide itself to take different paths, and the player can then choose which team to follow first.

Story

The story begins with Terra, a mysterious girl with magical powers, following the commands of a pair of soldiers in Magitek armor invading the peaceful town of __________ .

been controlled by the Evil Empireā„¢ through a mind-control headband. Yes, really. Emporer Gestahl is forcing her to pilot MagiTech armor, which is this big, chocobo-looking machine that is mainly good for killing innocent villagers. Terra and two of her captors, Biggs and Wedge, run into a frozen esper (the summons of FFVI) and she is freed. She gets generically mysterious amnesia and is found by Locke. Then you meet the Returners, a Rebellionā„¢, as well as a bunch of other minor characters that happen to be playable. The Returners want to overthrow the Empire, plot to overthrow the Empire, move to throw the Empire, and so forth.

Then, halfway through, the world gets destroyed.

The Returners (basically, your party) get scattered. Shadow, a generically mysterious party member, probably dies unless you are using a strategy guide. Same with Cid, and Celes (one of the more important people in your party) may or may not attempt suicide. Then everyone regroups and sets out to fight the final boss fight and hilariously evil clown, Kefka.

Then there are some credits.
