Final Fantasy V
From FFOWA Wiki
Final Fantasy V was released on December 6th, 1992 by Square Co., for the Super Famicon. The original Final Fantasy V was never released outside Japan, making it the second FF never to make it to America until 1998.
Final Fantasy V was remade in 1998 for the Sony Playstation, and was translated into English and released in America and Europe as Final Fantasy Anthology. This game has also been announced to be remade for the Nintendo Gameboy Advance, sometime in 2006.
Gameplay
Final Fantasy V uses the Job System, which was originally introduced in Final Fantasy III. There are 22 Jobs available. However, you start off as “Bare”, and work your way up to the last job, Mime. FFV also uses the Active Time Battle system much like Final Fantasy IV. The only change, however, was the introduction of the ATB bar.
Leveling up in Final Fantasy V is no different than leveling up in FF1, FF3, or FF4, with the exception of ABP. ABP’s are like Ability Points, and are gained to level up your job status. By leveling up your job status, you can learn abilities that increase your power, defense, or hit points. It also allowed you to use certain out-of-battle abilities that let you run faster, or see hidden passages. As the final ability for some jobs, you can equip a certain weapon such as Harp, Staff, or Rod.
Another major introduction to the Final Fantasy series was the two optional bosses, Omega and Shinyruu. Both of these bosses are very powerful, and require much strategy and leveling up to defeat. While defeating Omega gives you nothing, defeating Shinyruu will give you access to the most powerful sword in the game.
Story
Final Fantasy V starts off with Butz, the lone Chocobo rider, with his partner, Boko the Chocobo. Butz hears a loud crash, and discovers a meteor has fallen to the Earth. Not only did Butz discover a meteor, however, he also finds a young girl, Lenna, who is being attacked by Goblins. Butz saves the young girl, and meets an old man who has lost his memory completely, and knows nothing but his own name – Galuf. Lenna tells Butz and Galuf that she is on her way to the Wind Shrine, to save her father, the Tycoon King who may be in danger. Galuf suddenly recalls that he himself was on his way to the Wind Shrine, and decides to go with Lenna. Butz, however, continues on his journey with Boko.
Not long after the three part, Galuf and Lenna are attacked by more Goblins, but are saved by Butz and Boko. The three decide to travel together, but the path was blocked by the crash site, leaving them with only one choice to travel – water. This forces them to leave Boko behind.
With no wind do to the destruction of the Wind Crystal, the three decide to steal a ship from a greedy little pirate named Faris. However, Faris captures them before they are able to cast off. She notices Lenna’s pendant – A sign of being a princess, and she decides to help the crew go to the Wind Shrine. Since there is no wind to sail on, Faris must rely on her Serpent, Hydra, to pull the ship. The three make it to the Wind Shrine, only to discover King Tycoon, and a shattered Wind Crystal. King Tycoon explains to the four that they are destined to protect the earth against X-Death, who threatens to take over the world via Crystals. He explains to them that they must protect the three remaining crystals. The story continues on through World 1 (Butz’s world), World 2 (Galuf’s World), World 3 (A combination of World 1 and 2), and the N-Zone.
