Final Fantasy is the first game in the Final Fantasy series. It was developed by the Japanese company Square for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987. At the time of its development, the company was in bankruptcy. However, the game became wildly popular in Japan. It effectively saved Square from bankruptcy and spawned a number of sequels. The game has also been remade for a various number of consoles. Each time it has been upgraded slightly, such as improved graphics or sounds.

After Square was back in business, the game was finally released in North America in 1990.
