Despite its name, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within had nothing at all to do with the games. It was worked on by many of the same people, but did not feature the overall style, plot themes, or fantasy settings that tie the games together. Instead, the movie is set right here on Earth, about 60 years in the future. Rather than the more traditional FF story involving a small group of diverse and powerful rebels overthrowing some sort of tyrany, the story here is about alien ghosts bombarding the planet and forcing humans to live in cities protected by domes. The style leaves behind anime influences and instead tries to be as realistic as the 3D animation of the time allowed for.
The Spirits Within was released in 2001, and was Square's first venture into making feature films. It went so badly that they had to merge with their long-time rivals Enix in order to stay in business. This does not seem to have stopped them from making Advent Children.
Story
As mentioned above, Earth is being assaulted by waves of phantoms, which turn out to have been killed all at once when their planet was destroyed. The main character is Aki Ross, a scientist who has been posessed by one of the phantoms. Her research has turned to trying to collect seven spirits from specific living things on Earth which will allow her to protect both herself and the planet from the phantoms.
Since that doesn't provide a specific villain so much as a problem to solve, there is also General Hein. Hein lost a loved one to the phantoms and turned to finding his own way of defeating them. He builds a satellite with which to shoot and destroy a nest of phantoms living inside the Earth. The good guys have to stop him because there's a big chance he'll blow up the planet along side them. The seventh spirit that Aki needs turns out to be in that same nest, as well. The satellite fails to do any good, though it does add drama by destroying the shield on Aki's vessel. She finds the last spirit, and her love interest, Captain Grey, sacrifices himself to use the wave that she creates with the combined spirits. The phantoms leave the Earth and everybody lives happily ever after. Except Grey, because he's dead.
